"For colored girls"

Ok, so over the weekend I went to the movies wit my bestie to see Tyler Perry's "For colored girls". Now, since the premier, I've read mostly bad reviews from critics (of course! Haters!) pulling the race card and saying that the women in the film were trying too hard to gain Oscar nods and yada yada...but I heard great reviews from all the women I know. After seeing it for myself, I must say that I thought it was very powerful and very beautifully done. The way Perry incorporated the poetry into the script was perfect! THAT is what stood out most to me! THAT was the powerful aspect of the film in itself in my opinion.

I can see where some may say parts of the film seemed a bit "extra", but maybe that's because those people have never known anyone in the situations expressed in the film! Sadly, most of us "colored girls' and just women period, go through it more often than not! I can surely say that I personally have experienced or can relate to at least one character or situation in some way. And I have friends who can say the same so obviously there is nothing "extra" about it! What's crazy is that one specific incident from the movie was just in the news a week ago so obviously the realness of these situations do occur. Maybe the issue is that Tyler wasn't afraid to speak on it and show it in its realest form and mainstream society hates to face facts! And for those who feel a way about the title, that's just to bad! It's about time things were made for us! to speak to our young women out there, give them something to empower themselves and lift them up and possibly save them from future pain and sorrow.

I don't want to say too much and give away anything for those of you who have yet to see it, but if/when you do go to see it, really take it in! Really listen to the stories...the poetry...the message! I advise you NOT to go to a ghetto theater (like my bff and I mistakenly did)as you will not be able to hear key parts of the movie! But again, I LOVED it! I thought Perry did a great job in the script as well as casting the right actresses to play the characters! I absolutely LOVE Thandie Newton (she was hilarious), Phylicia Rashad, and the youngest cast member Tessa Thompson was great. Kimberly Elise, as always, was amazing and her monologue at the end alone brought me to tears! All in all, it was very well done and if you DIDN'T get it...as the title suggests...maybe it wasn't for YOU!

  1. Hmmm, I love me some Thandie (candy) Newton, ever since Mission Impossible III. Movie sounds interesting, as I find most Perry movies to be. I'll check it out. My younger cousin Kimberly had "Spanish girls ain't got nothing on us black girls" Im beginning to wonder if it's this movie, or the fact she broke up with her Boyfriend recently.

And what's it worth to you, if I were to write an app to freeze time) ;-)
